Local Area Information

Objectivist Summer Conference 2007 will be held in Telluride, Colorado. The Telluride Conference Center, a state-of-the-art facility opened in 1999, is the site for all the lectures and evening events of Objectivist Summer Conference 2007. It is located in Mountain Village [map], nestled in the slopes overlooking Telluride. Those lodging in Telluride can easily reach the conference center via Telluride's free gondola service, which connects the towns of Telluride and Mountain Village with a thirteen-minute transit. The gondola runs seven days a week, from 7 AM to midnight. Please note that the gondola may cease operations during severe weather.

Dining

You won't go hungry in Telluride or Mountain Village, with dozens of high-quality restaurants to choose from. Mexican, Italian, steak and seafood, pizza, BBQ, New American cuisine and much more are yours to discover this summer.

Shopping

For the shopper, Telluride offers one-of-a-kind boutiques, galleries full of original art, sports shops with the latest equipment and a comfortable bookstore warmed with freshly brewed coffee. Clothing, gifts and southwestern and Rocky Mountain home furnishings shops abound on Telluride's pedestrian-friendly streets. For your relaxation, Telluride offers several day spas.

Recreation

Telluride's biggest attraction is, naturally, its outdoor activities, and there are many to choose from, with hiking, climbing, biking, camping, fishing, golf and much more within easy distance. In addition to the attractions listed here, your hotel can provide you with recommendations.

  • Live music is available for free every Wednesday evening in Mountain Village's Town Square, presented by the Sunset Concert Series.
  • A popular stargazing site is available at the Station St. Sophia, midway on the gondola ride between Telluride and Mountain Village.
  • Daily rail trips are available from nearby Durango or Silverton, on the Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad. The track winds through some of the West's most dramatic country, and once carried $300 million in gold and silver ore from Silverton to Durango.
  • East of Telluride, you will find Bridal Veil Falls, the longest free-falling waterfall in Colorado at 365 feet.
  • Near Telluride you will also find the Lizard Head Wilderness Area and the Mt. Sneffels Wilderness Area, which offer remarkable day hikes through rugged mountain areas.
  • In addition, a wide variety of hiking, biking and Jeeping trails are available in the area immediately surrounding Telluride. Mountain bikers may take their bikes onto the gondola to access free world-class biking trails.
The Telluride Tourism Board offers more information about dining, shopping and recreation.

High-Altitude Information

The elevation is 8,750 feet in the town of Telluride, and 9,540 feet at the conference center in Mountain Village; everyone should take precautions for high altitude. The chances of developing Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) are greater if one ascends quickly and is immediately physically active. Many people who ascend to Telluride's altitude experience some altitude-related symptoms, regardless of physical conditioning. Tips to avoid AMS include:

  • avoiding alcohol for a few days;
  • drinking plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration—water is best;
  • avoiding caffeine;
  • eating lightly;
  • taking aspirin or an anti-inflammatory;
  • participating in moderate activity; avoiding over-exertion for two to three days.
Diamox, a prescription medication, is sometimes used in low doses to help prevent AMS. If you have previously experienced AMS, talk to your doctor before coming to Telluride.

Please follow appropriate preventive measures and "take care in the mountain air." If you have tried the preventive measures and still have symptoms you should seek medical attention immediately.
