Dance Workshop

Introduction to the Lindy
David Rehm
Thursday, July 8, 2009; 8–9:30 PM (followed by open social dancing)

The Lindy Hop, or Lindy, is a partnered swing dance done to big band music and characterized primarily by its partner dynamic—specifically the way in which partners generate and redirect momentum between them. It is the grandfather of all the swing dances, and the first American-created partner dance of any kind. Coupled with the exuberance of big band swing music, the Lindy can uniquely capture and celebrate the spirit of human efficacy in motion—as did Lindbergh’s “hop” across the Atlantic from which it got its name.

This class introduces the basic Lindy partner dynamic, corresponding movement style and several simple variation patterns. No partner or prior dance experience required, but it is recommended that participants be familiar with at least some form of simple swing with triple-steps.
